The Anna Compact
V2 Claudio Sanchez Signature Pedal
Only available through reverb.com
In 2022, as a celebration to mark the 20th anniversary of the 2002 album The Second Stage Turbine Blade, Claudio Sanchez and Wren and Cuff released Anna, a dual pedal consisting of two independent effects: a pure overdrive based on a Boss SD-1 circuit, and the Big Muff side, based on Claudio’s late 70’s op-amp Big Muff.
The Muff side was left untouched, a detailed replica created at the Wren and Cuff shop of Claudio’s original pedal. This is the one that carries the name “Anna” inside the enclosure, likely the name of someone working in the old NYC Electro-Harmonix shop nearly 50 years ago. However, the story of the overdrive side of the pedal ended up being much different.
Claudio’s original SD-1 had long been lost to time. Countless rehearsals, shows, lugging gear through different cities and countries, it had been absorbed into the Elysium of valiant lost effects pedals. Since the original unit wasn’t available, Matt used his own favorite SD-1 as a model and then built a prototype with several added options. This was meant as a tester so Claudio could give feedback on the choices and narrow it down to a single OD. But Claudio’s response was, “Can we keep all the options?” He loved the versatility that came from being able to sculpt his sound with more choices, including the stock OD circuit.
Enter the Anna Compact:
The idea came about a couple years after the original Anna when all parties agreed that it might be cool to do a smaller, more compact version. After various layout options and tweaks, the Anna Compact was born.
First off, some things to know. The Anna Compact is primarily an overdrive pedal. In fact, the original prototype was simply the drive side of the full-size Anna. But once the circuit board was made, Matt realized he might be able to squeeze in the Anna’s fuzz circuit, with a couple of mini-knobs and a toggle switch. Some controls were shifted, some mini potentiometers were sourced, and a two-control Muff circuit with a bypass switch was added.
How does it work?
The fuzz can be switched in after the drive circuit for when you want the full stinger tone Claudio was fond of years ago. The fuzz circuit cannot be used independently. It is either in series with the drive, or bypassed. Use the fuzz with restraint because feedback and noise will come hard and fast! If that is what you want, then enjoy the glorious chaos.
Use the Anna Compact to tap into Claudio’s original Coheed and Cambria tones, and take advantage of its options to sculpt your own unique sound. Thank you for picking up your Anna Compact. We appreciate you.
A Hidden Feature:
The EQ on the fuzz circuit is set to a neutral position, but if you’d like to tweak it, you can remove the back of the pedal and use a mini-Phillips head screwdriver to gently adjust the trim-pot.
Tip:
When combining both circuits, start with the volume and gain set low on each effect. Gradually adjust the controls to explore a wide range of tones. Try high gain on one side and low on the other, or vice versa. The controls are highly interactive and respond dynamically to each other.
